Wednesday TV Ratings: Idol Wins, Criminal Minds/ ABC Comedies Strong

On a night with a sure fire American Idol win, ABC’s comedies and Criminal Minds were also strong.

American Idol led FOX to victory last night, posting a 9.8 rating and 26.7 million viewers – still holding very strong vs. last year. At 9, the second episode of Human Target was roughly level with last nights pilot repeat posting a 3.4 (18-49) rating and 10.4 million viewers.

CBS was second for the night, starting off with a weak Old Christine (1.9, 6.5 million) and equally weak Gary Unmarried (1.9, 6.2 million). Criminal Minds was the nights second strongest show, posting a 4.3 (18-49) rating and 15.3 million viewers. At 10, CSI: NY was solid with a 3.7 rating and 13.9 million viewers.

ABC was third with a mixture of reruns and originals. At 8, a Modern Family rerun posted a 1.6 (18-49) rating leading into a rerun of The Middle, which posted a 1.7 rating and 4.7 million viewers. At 9, a new episode of Modern Family posted a very strong 4.1 (18-49) rating and 9.8 million viewers leading into a new Cougar Town, which posted a 3.4 (18-49) rating and 7.6 million viewers – up vs. last weeks 3.1. At 10, Ugly Betty was level with last weeks 1.6 rating and 4.6 million viewers.

Fourth was NBC, which went with a new episode of Mercy at 8, drawing 5.8 million viewers and a 1.4 (18-49) rating. A rerun of Law & Order: SVU was fourth in the 9pm hour, posting a 1.4 rating and 5.6 million viewers – it just can’t wait to get back to 10pm. The Jay Leno Show was poor last night, posting just a 1.2 (18-49) rating and 4.6 million viewers.

The CW was in reruns last night, with a second airing of new show Life UneXpected posting a 0.7 (18-49) rating and 1.7 million viewers (Better than the last original airing of Melrose Place). A Gossip Girl rerun posted a 0.4 rating and 0.8 million viewers at 9pm.

Monday TV Ratings: How I Met Your Mother Sets Highs, 2.5 Men Beats TBBT, Heroes Hits Lows

On a night with no new House but the return of 24 to Monday nights, it was How I Met Your Mother that took advantage – hitting season highs in the process.

CBS had a solid Monday night (as usual) with How I Met Your Mother (4.0, 10.5 million) and Accidentally on Purpose (3.5, 9.6 million) hitting season and series highs in their respective timeslots. At 9, Two and a Half Men (5.3, 16.2 million) beat The Big Bang Theory (5.2, 15 million) for the first time in quite a while. CSI: Miami was steady with last week with a 3.6 (18-49) rating and 13.2 million viewers.

ABC came second with two episodes of The Bachelor, posting an average 3.8 and 10.6 million viewers – down slightly vs. last weeks premiere. At 10, Castle continued to improve, posting a 2.8 (18-49) rating and 9.4 million viewers.

24 had its timeslot premiere last night, posting a 3.5 (18-49) rating between 8-10 – good enough for third place for FOX.

NBC went with a brand new Chuck at 8, posting a 2.5 rating and 6.7 million viewers – down .2 in the key demos and over half a million viewers from last week. At 9, Heroes continued with their rapid decline, posting just a 1.8 (18-49) rating and just 3.9 million viewers. At 10 – in what’s rumoured to be one of the very last – Jay Leno Show posted just a 1.3 rating and 4.6 million viewers.

The CW was back in originals last night, with One Tree Hill posting a 1.1 (18-49) rating and 2.2 million viewers leading into the premiere of Life UneXpected, which posted a solid 1.2 (18-49) rating and 2.7 million viewers in its first outing.

Thursday TV Ratings: Bones Hits Season Highs, 30 Rock Hit Season Lows, Greys/Private Practice Crossover Wins

Last night ABC were the winners with the Greys Anatomy/Private Practice crossover, Bones set season highs and 30 Rock was beaten by Community.

ABC won the night starting off with an ABC News special on the Haiti Earthquake (1.4, 5.4 million). This lead into a Grey’s Anatomy/ Private Practice crossover event which averaged 11.9 million viewers and a 4.5 (18-49) rating.

FOX and CBS tied for second place but I’m gonna lead with FOX first because they generally have a better 18-34 rating. At 8pm, Bones set season highs, posting a 3.3 (18-49) rating and 10.7 million viewers – a season high. At 9, Fringe posted its best numbers (in that timeslot) in a while against less competition (notably missing: The Office), posting a 2.6 (18-49) rating and 6.6 million viewers.

CBS was third for the night with an original episode of CSI, which posted a 3.3 (18-49) rating and 15.4 million viewers. At 10, The Mentalist improved on its lead in (in the key demo) with a 3.4 (18-49) rating but had slightly less viewers (15.3 million).

NBC was horrible, posting its worst night for a while (with all new airings). At 8, Community continued to grow, posting a 2.3 (18-49) rating and 5.4 million viewers leading in to Parks & Recreation, which posted an average 2.1 (18-49) rating and 4.6 million viewers. At 9, 30 Rock showed us why it needs the office as a lead in – a 2.3 (18-49) rating and just 5.1 million viewers (yep, that’s right – 30 Rock was beaten by Community last night). At 10, Leno (and Jimmy Kimmel reading the 10 @ 10) posted an average 1.3 (18-49) rating and 4.4 million viewers.

CBS Sweeps Monday in all Key Ratings Measures

Season-high ratings for the 100th episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and TWO AND A HALF MEN and series highs for THE BIG BANG THEORY led CBS to a Monday win in all ratings measures, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for Jan. 11.

The 100th episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (6.0/09, 9.82m) was first in adults 18-34 (3.9/10) and second in adults 25-54 (4.4/10) and adults 18-49 (3.9/10).  Compared to the last first-run episode (on Dec. 14, 2009), HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was up +2% in both households (from 5.9/09) and adults 25-54 (from 4.3/11), +5% in adults 18-49 (from 3.7/11), +15% in adults 18-34 (from 3.4/11) and added +160,000 viewers (from 9.66m, +2%). This was HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER’s best delivery in both households and viewers since March 2, 2009, its best in adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since April 13, 2009, and in adults 18-34 since Jan. 12, 2009.

Among regularly scheduled programming, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER delivered the time period’s best performance with men 18-34 since March 25, 2002 (“King of Queens”), and with adults 18-34 and women 18-34 since March 31, 2003 (also “King of Queens”).

TWO AND A HALF MEN won its time slot in households (10.2/15), viewers (17.30m), adults 25-54 (6.9/15), adults 18-49 (5.4/13) and adults 18-34 (3.8/13).  Compared to the last first-run episode (on Dec. 14, 2009), TWO AND A HALF MEN was up +4% in both households (from 9.8/15) and adults 18-49 (from 5.2/13), +6% in adults 25-54 (from 6.5/15) and added +910,000 viewers (from 16.39m, +6%).  This was the best TWO AND A HALF MEN delivery in viewers since Dec. 15, 2008, the show’s best in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since Feb. 2, 2009.

THE BIG BANG THEORY won its time slot in households (9.3/14), viewers (15.81m), adults 25-54 (7.0/15), adults 18-49 (5.7/14) and adults 18-34 (4.2/11).   THE BIG BANG THEORY posted series highs in viewers, adults 25-54 and adults 18-49.  THE BIG BANG THEORY improved on its TWO AND A HALF MEN lead-in in adults 25-54 (+1%), adults 18-49 (+6%) and adults 18-34 (+11%).

At 8:30 PM, ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE (5.2/08, 8.52m) averaged a 3.8/09 in adults 25-54 and 3.2/08 in adults 18-49.

CSI: MIAMI was first in households (8.7/15), viewers (13.65m), adults 25-54 (4.9/12), adults 18-49 (3.7/10) and adults 18-34 (2.5/07).

For the night, CBS was first in households (8.0/13), viewers (13.13m), adults 25-54 (5.3/12), adults 18-49 (4.2/11) and adults 18-34 (3.3/09).

It’s the holidays, peeps. What else did you expect?

The two leading shows for the night were ABC’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas and CBS’ CSI: NY. Criminal Minds was a close third, just ahead of Modern Family and The Middle reruns on ABC.

Monday TV Ratings: Big Bang Wins Repeats, Find My Family Falls To Lows

On a night with most networks in reruns, it was CBS which took the ratings crown. My best guess is that all of the broadcast networks were beaten out by the Giants/Redskins game on ESPN last night.

CBS won the night with reruns of How I Met Your Mother (1.8), Accidentally on Purpose (1.7), Two and a Half Men (3.1) and the nights highest rated show, The Big Bang Theory (3.3). CSI: Miami was 10pm’s #1 show with a 2.4 (18-49) rating, beating an original of The Jay Leno Show.

NBC was second for the night with 2 hours of The Sing Off, which averaged a solid 2.3 (18-49) rating. At 10, Leno was beaten by a rerun of CSI: Miami – posting just a 1.6 (18-49) rating.

FOX took third place with reruns of House (1.6) and Lie To Me (1.3) beating out ABC, which went with a rerun of I Want a Dog For Christmas, Charlie Brown (1.8), a new Find My Family (1.2, season lows) and a Castle rerun (1.0).

The CW was last with reruns of One Tree Hill (0.3) and Gossip Girl (0.3).

GARY UNMARRIED attracted its largest audience ever and highest demos in more than a year, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE delivered its best ratings in more than a year and CRIMINAL MINDS scored its best ratings since its season premiere, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for Wednesday, Dec. 16.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE was first in households (4.9/08), viewers (7.82m), adults 25-54 (3.1/09) and tied for first in adults 18-49 (2.4/07, with FOX).  Compared to last week, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE was up +2% in households (from 4.8/08), +11% in adults 25-54 (from 2.8/07), +9% in adults 18-49 (from 2.2/06) and added +330,000 viewers (from 7.49m, +4%).  This was the show’s best viewers delivery since Dec. 10, 2008, and its best deliveries in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since Nov. 19, 2008.

GARY UNMARRIED was first in households (4.8/08), viewers (7.92m), adults 25-54 (3.2/09) and second in adults 18-49 (2.5/07, -0.1 behind FOX).  Compared to the last week, GARY UNMARRIED was up +9% in both households (from 4.4/07) and adults 18-49 (from 2.3/06), +10% in adults 25-54 (from 2.9/07) and added +910,000 viewers (from 7.01m, +13%).  This was the best viewer delivery for GARY UNMARRIED ever and best adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 since Nov. 19, 2008.

CRIMINAL MINDS was first in households (9.0/14), viewers (14.60m), adults 25-54 (5.2/13) and adults 18-49 (3.7/10).  This was CRIMINAL MINDS’s best deliveries in viewers and adults 25-54 since Sept.23, 2009 (the season premiere).

CSI: NY was first in households (8.5/15), viewers (13.50m), adults 25-54 (4.4/12) and adults 18-49 (3.1/09).  CSI: NY beat the competition combined in households (vs. 5.9/10, +44%), viewers (vs. 9.15m, +48%), adults 25-54 (3.5/09, +26%) and adults 18-49 (vs. 2.9/09, +7%).

For the night, CBS was first in households (7.4/12), viewers (11.99m), adults 25-54 (4.2/11) and adults 18-49 (3.1/09).  CBS won every half-hour in households, viewers and adults 25-54 for the third consecutive night and was first in five of six half-hours in adults 18-49.

Even though it was the So You Think You Can Dance finale last night, it was CBS that took the ratings crown.

In Brief:

So You Think You Can Dance drove FOX to second with it’s highest (18-49) rating in some time with a 2.6.

Criminal Minds took the nights top (18-49) rating with a 3.7, beating CSI: NY (3.1) into second.
